    Parent Contributes For Child

We just had a thread about a parent not being able to claim a charitable contribtuion that the child actually made. How about this, Father pays for two plane tickets for himself and son to go to New Orleans to volunteer for Habitats, building houses. I assume in this scenario, father can claim cost of son's plane ticket, agreed?

Looks like no deduction. Pub 17, p. 157, last bullet point in center column. "Contribs You Cannot Deduct"
"Expenses you paid for another person who provided services to a qualified organization. Example- Your son does missionary work. You pay his expenses. You cannot claim a deduction for your son's unreimbursed expenses related to his contribution of services."

      Son as dependent

Would it make a difference if the son is still his dependent? Just curious.

Only if it made the son a non-person.
