Grandmother came in and wanted to claim here grandson who lived with her all year. She did not have the actual SSAN car but gave me the number. It started with "999". My software kicks this out. Would this be a temporary number?

I refer to a list of SS number allocations when they look "funny". It lists the first 3 numbers & gives geographic info.

Regarding the Railroad numbers: 700-728 Issuance of these numbers to railroad employees was discontinued July 1, 1963.

Also from SSA.GOV: To determine if an SSN is invalid consider the following: No SSNs with an area number in the 800 or 900 series, or "000" area number, have been assigned. No SSNs with an area number above 772 have been assigned in the 700 series.

Here is a kicker: No SSNs with an area number of "666" have been or will be assigned.
Do you suppose Nancy Reagan had something to do with this?

IRS Publication 1346 attachment #9. Nice one to have a print out of, but anyway regarding your 999 number.

The 999 should be valid. It would be an ITIN or ATIN (Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number)

For ITIN:

First 3 digits ("area") 900-999
Middle 2 digits ("group") 70-88
Last four digits ("serial") 0000-9999

For ATIN, "area" and "serial" have same valid ranges, while middle 2 ("group") would be 93.

So only reason it should be kicking that out is for the middle two.

Location by SSN

I seem to recall that the SSN is no longer following the "geographical" issues related to the first three digits. (Some bureaucrat has a reason for that.) Unless I am mistaken, someone in CA can get one new SSN and the next sequential number could be someone in ME.

Too bad - I once could start some nice conversations, a la "Oh, so you must have lived in New England" or something along that line.
