    Coach's mileage

Coach, who is not a teacher, coaches several high school sports. He drives an employer provided vehicle to and from job 1, and stops at home every day to get his own car and go to the hs gym, job 2. My opinion is that the mileage to and from the gym is not deductible business mileage, (since he leaves from home and does not go directly from job 1 to job 2) assuming that the hs gym is his "place of employment."

Also, he contends that he does more work at home for his coaching (watching game films, etc. etc) than at the gym, and wondered if his home could be considered his workplace for coaching. (There is no office-in-home). I'm thinking no, but want input from others who have run into this... Thanks.

    W-2 or 1099 income

Does he get a w-2 from the school or is this 1099-misc income?

I have a guy that referees high school games that is on a 1099-misc.

I follow you thought process Melaniecpa. Maybe the cost of some of the films he watched if he is doing it only for work- but possibly he is getting some personal fullfillment as well - but I would say no to mileage.
