    Security Dog

Client has a dog that patrols his storage yard. he stores his ATM machines etc in a building on location.

How would that be reported on his schedule c. Depreciate dog?, how long?

    Thanks

Sch C, page 2 other expenses "Security Dog Expenses". I dare you to try and depreciate it. I have "heard" in the past that this has been done.

If you are going to do anything with the dog, just pick up food and vets> nothing else.

I agree with ecb about the Schedule C, but

I'm not quite as bold as he is (you have to watch those JH guys -- you know how they are). I think maybe I'd bury this one in....ummm....maybe "Contract labor" -- after all the pooch is working for food (though I'd omit a 1099 if I were you).

As an alternative, next year tell client to raise a garden somewhere on the lot, have dog fertilize it, thus converting to farm use -- might then fit into similar category as Horse (non-race, MACRS - 3 years (over age 12) or 7 years (under age 12).

            Another question to consider

Does mean ole Poochie have a SSN or perhaps a benefits/retirement plan?

Fertile grounds to pursue, in addition to that "garden"!

              Many years ago

when I was working in that storefront company, I had a client that had a guard dog on his property. I do remember that I took some of the expenses of the dog but for the life of me I can't remember about depreciation.

Thanx for the applause folks, but

I work much cheaper than that and, besides, my wife doesn't think I'm nearly as funny as you do (I'll bet all of you hear the same thing I do -- "Get off that darn tax board and get to work!")

Black Bart - Didn't you see my "tongue in cheek" on the dog and depreciating it? Did have an OTR guy a couple of years ago ask about "his security dog" because "all the guys have one and expense them". I asked what kind of "security dog" did he have and how was it used? He answer "small lap dog that barked like H*** when anybody came near the cab." Chuckled like H*** and said "'Naw, I don't think you had better go that way" and dropped it. Maybe I should go back and amend!

                          My watchdog

My watchdog is a Chihuahua. I think he is an illegal immigrant, so I pay him under the table.

Now THAT was a good one.....I needed a lift.....also I once actually owned a chihuahua!

So why I am now thinking of a modification of that old Jim Croce song: "Meaner than a junkyard chihuahua" ???
