      1040 or 1040-a?

Question: Is this link saying that the use of Form 1040A IS REQUIRED to get the stimulus rebate if SS recipients are not required to file or are not filing for a refund of withheld tax? This doesn't make sense to me -- I'm using 1040s for everything, all the income's listed, and what's the difference?

This link doesn't specifically say a 1040 WON'T be allowed, but the third paragraph of page 3 seems to imply that it would need to be on a 1040A to be viewed as a valid stimulus claim if they're not otherwise required to file.

If it's so, I'm gonna just hate having to eat my words after previously saying I'd rather fight than switch (from 1040 to 1040A). Davc told us so on another thread (dang know-it-all; I just hate people who know more'n me and they're everywhere), but whoda thunk it?

I think I'll call that IRS number on page 5 Monday and see about it. Any opinions?

        Me too

I also do not prepare 1040 EA or 1040A returns. I have one sitting on my desk now, hoping for efile, rather than paper return.

I thought someone said we could still report on form 1040.

Right or wrong, many are being e-filed as 1040 with all income reported, but still no taxable. They are being acknowledged. Suppose we will find out later. Through the "back door" IRS has indicated they will be able to accept xero AGI shortly. They are all ready being swamped with paper returns, 1040x's because of AMT delays, etc.

Maybe I'm on my own here, but

I think it's a good thing for IRS to be swamped with paper returns. This means they have to concentrate on processing all that paper and hopefully keeps them out of our hair regarding other mischeif those resources could be focused on if they weren't tied up. This is another of the many reasons I continue to refuse to efling until they drag me kicking & screaming into the fold. Every year I'm doing my part to keep the paper blizzard going, and proud of it.

Interesting........the overwhelming majority of my clients love e-file.

Actually, I have several clients who send me everything electronically, and I do the same in the reverse direction. The only pieces of actual paper that either of us send are the original W2s/1099Rs/etc and the signed Form 8879 that I keep in my files. That might not even be necessary these days, but at least in that area I'm kinda stuck in my ways.
