    Contributions to boosters

Little old lady gave me list of her contributions and has included checks to boosters clubs of local high school and university. Are these deductible? Can't seem to find an answer.

I don't have any cites, but it's being widely advertised as deductible. Go to Google and type in "Booster club deductible." You'll see lots of statements from schools claiming contributions to their booster clubs are deductible.

        Booster club

out were Bs works the booster clubs are required to turn money over to the school so as to get the tax deduction. I hate to admit my age, but this was becoming an "issue" then. The one booster club was formed as a membership (6)? or (7)?, but the school wanted the funds-take a guess how many boosters wanted to give it to them. The hockey booster club at the time was not going to turn it over.

If the booster organization is organized as a 501(c)3 the contribution is deductible. If not - no deduction. Check with the organization directly, or search on Guidestar. IRS website I think also has an online search engine for organized charities.

IRS Pub 79, however if they had gross of less than $25K, no 990 is required and won't be in pub. Also, I've found the pub to way outdated.

Depends on what type of school

Most schools are public schools, an arm of local (county) governments, therefore any
contribution to a governmental agency is tax deductible.

Private schools I would say are a different animal altogether.

How do you locate non-profits at the IRS website.

I tried and get all sorts of stuff, but what I am looking for.

I want to be able to log in the organization name and see if it qualifies.

Do a search on the IRS website for Publication 78. However, they've disabled the search engine for 90 days for "repairs" and replaced it with an excel spreadsheet. Try Guidestar.org which also has a wealth of other information, including copies of recently filed Form 990's.

                    501(c)3

Booster club will not qualify. Go get sales tax from them for selling clothing and running the food stands. Treasurer will go to jail or pay penalties. Whatever state your in will have the best listing of charities. MN it is the Attny General. Be careful on who has to file-easy to do, but if your active I think everyone is filing the on line information even if under $25,000. Most got IRS correspondence telling them to file.

This is incorrect. There are hundreds of booster clubs which have been granted 501(c)3 exemption status by the Service.
