    filing to get a rebate

NOW we have been told that to obtain a tax rebate, taxpayers will be required to file
tax returns even though their income is not sufficient to normally require them to file.
Twenty MILLION returns are expected to be filed which have ONLY social security benefits
reported and perhaps a small amount of other income. IRS anticipates issuing 31 million
dollars in rebates. This means many people in nursing homes will need to file returns to
get this rebate. How stupid can Congress be?

    How is the service

going to handle millions of new paper tax returns? They don't have the personnel anymore.

I'm gonna go set up shop in nursing homes. Then I'm gonna hire high school students to help me and offer each resident with SSA payments the chance to get $ 300 for only $ 25. I'm gonna be rich.

I had a lady call today. 75 years old only has social security benefits. Son is disabled and get his father's social security. She was asking me about her needing to file a return. I read what was on the taxbook site. I told her I think she would but to let me double check.

So I guess she will have to file to get the rebate? What about the son? He is 33. Due to his disability he can not really file a return... down syndrome. She was wondering about him being able to get it or her getting the extra 300 for him. I think the extra 300 is only available for those that are able to claim child tax credit?

I would say as long as son gets at least $3000 in SS benefits, he qualifies for $300, but only if he files his own tax return. If he cannot sign mom probably has POA.

Normally it's not a "choice" for this person to be a dependent of someone else or not, either he is a QC or a QR of someone or he's not. But would it be for the F#*@g stimulus rebate?

So many questions and so little time for research.

I seem to running into this w/ college students as some of these kids are making some decent money and have scholarships offsetting the tuition deductions - are they a dependent on Mom and Dads or should they file on their own if it's an extra $600 back? Who really provides more than 50% support, themselves or Mom & Dad. So much to take into consideration.

I wouldn't even consider the rebate in that determination. Stick to the support rules. Getting a rebate is not the issue, proper tax return preparation is.
