We had about 8 below temps Sunday with wind chills ranging from 25 to 40 below. The Minneapolis / St. Paul metro area is much further south than International Falls and much warmer. They get 40 below temps every year. We rarely get to 20 below.
I almost had to put a hat and some gloves on the other day. -
Sorry, couldn't help but jump in....
I'm from a little further north of you Bees; Duluth. Sunday morning we woke up to -20 with windchill of -50. Yesterday (Monday) we started out at -18 and got up to a high of 14. Today started out at 4 and I'm hopeful.
I couldn't take the I-Falls temps, now that's just plain freezing!Comment

Do you mind me asking what part of Duluth you grew up in? I was born at St. Luke's Hospital and grew up for the first 10 years in Rice Lake Township (just outside the city limits; but with Duluth address) and the next 8 years I lived up at Island Lake in Gnesen Township (the next township north of Rice Lake; but still Duluth address); then my husband and I bought a house in Kenwood and lived there about 4 years. Now we live in Gnesen again and built on 10 acres of land. It may be cold here, but I LOVE it.Comment

MN a long time ago
I grew up in WI (Burlington & Thiensville); went to school in MN (St Olaf & U of MN); met the love of my life (married 31 happy years) and moved to Cleveland OH area after the Tax Reform Act of 1986.
These Ohio people do NOT know what cold is! Anything in the teens (chill factor) and they think they are frozen.
Also, a little lite snow and they drive 30 mph.
The weather is quite mild, spring comes earlier and the community is very enjoyable.
I am new to the board. I do mainly 990's, 990-PF's and 5227's.Comment

Duluth is a very unique city. Much different than the rest of Minnesota. It is like living in a different country compared to the Twin Cities. You haven’t lived until you try driving up and down the steep city streets during a snow storm. Its like trying to drive up or down a ski jump ramp.Comment

Duluth - A Hillbilly impression
Been there one time (in 2007). Always wanted to go, as it is the origin of not only Bees Knees but also a gentleman called Bob Zimmerman. Y'all know him as Bob Dylan. My uncle came from around Arnold, and told me if I ever drove over the ridge from Proctor and saw the town and lake ahead it would take my breath away. Guess I'll never know -- I had to come in from Superior.
I could imagine it being bleak, with the ultimate wet & gloomy gray skies in the winter. But the day I was there it was clear and beautiful. GitcheGumee had a cobalt lustre -- if you like blue, this was the most gorgeous blue ever created in nature. I wanted to go to Hibbing in the Arrowhead (no one knows why), but I didn't have time.
The typical drop of rain falling on the shores of Duluth will take 138 years to reach Lake Huron at the Straits of Mackinac. (Some idiot in Wisconsin told me this trivia. I wouldn't dare bore anyone else by repeating it). So I poured out some bottled water. If any of you go up there periodically, you can report its progress for the benefit of my great-great-grandchildren.
Bees says he moved from Duluth to Buffalo. What a relief it was for him to leave all that snow behind.Comment

I totally agree with you (Bees) on the Duluth hill driving conditions. I was terrified to drive downtown when I first got my license. I got stuck on an East Hillside Hill one time when I was about 19 (in an '83 rear-wheel drive Camaro) and a bunch of us had to push my car up to the next block. I remember because I wrecked my pants from sliding around. I then had to drive it downhill and further west in town to find a street that I could actually drive up. When I think of a downtown, I picture "down" and hills. When I go to other towns/cities to visit and I see a sign saying "downtown", I think to myself, "well, where are the hills?" Goofy, I know. Most streets in our downtown require a running start in the winter and if you stop; your stuck.

Nashville: Yep, we're famous for the Bob Dylan thing. Way before my time (I just turned 30), but interesting non-the-less. Your uncle grew up where I grew up. Arnold is in Rice Lake Township. The old Arnold school (doesn't exist anymore) is where my grandparents and parents met one another. Lot's of Finlander's around here. Your uncle was right for what he told you about the Proctor hill view of Duluth. It's AMAZING. Whenever I go out of town and then come back over that hill, I feel like singing 'the hills are alive' and a smile comes across my face. There's truly nothing like it anywhere on earth. The Superior, WI view is nice too, you can see all the bridges, including the lift bridge which is a very cool bridge.
Hibbing is nice too. It's a little more towards the center of the state and there's really nothing around it other than small mining towns. Very cool scenary though. There's some really neat mining trucks that you can go walk up to and take pics of standing next to. The tires alone are twice as tall as we are. That's the area they did the filming of North Country (Charlize Theron was the star), and also in the town of Virginia. We like to drive up to the Iron Range and stop in the small towns for lunch and check out the local shops. The people are friendly up there. The North Shore (towards Grand Marais) is absoultely breathtaking too. Lot's of ritzy places/resorts popping up along there the past decade or so. Lutsen Ski Mountain is up that way and it's a beautiful place too. I believe "Larry M" from this board likes to go up and stay there every once in awhile.
Interesting about the drop of water. Never know what I'll learn from this board.
We are really down on our snowfall for the year. We were last year too. It goes in streaks. A few years ago, we'd get dumped on during a 24 hour storm; like 24" at a time. This past December we got a storm that dumped 12-24". Since then, January was pretty much a bust and February has been really kind. My driveway is over a quarter-mile long and we plow it ourselves, so even though I LOVE snowmobiling, I don't mind the years we don't get quite so much snow.

I don't know Duluth, but I grew up in Pittsburgh PA, and I describe it to the Californians I now live around as 'san francisco with a lot of snow'. Maybe not as much as Minnesota, but I can't imagine the hills of Pgh in MN either. When I started driving we didn't have any of those pansy-a*&ed 4 wheel drive or front wheel drive, nope we had good ole rear wheel drive.
My sister now lives outside of Washington DC, and down there, they get a few flakes and freak out. I've been there when it snowed; the whole city closes down for nothing.Comment

There's also Giant's Ridge; that's a neat place too. Although Duluth does also have it's very own ski hill resort called Spirit Mountain and we hold the annual SnoCross Snowmobile races every year. It's actually the starter to the season for the X-Games. It's pretty cool watching those machines jump super high up into the air off the mogules, all while having the backround of the Great Lake Superior to look at behind them.Comment
