Tuition Statement form 1098-T - who gets deduction

Tuition Statement form 1098-T shows the dependent student's name and social security #, however the parent paid for the tution - so:

Would you agree with the following?
The parent take the $ billed for the dependent student's qualified tuition and related expenses (box 2) less scholarships and grants (box 5) as an education credit but not the tuition and fees deduction even though the social security # is on the form 1098 T ? (If I am reading the Tax Book correctly on page 12-3)

    thanks in advance

    Education Benefits

If the parents are claiming the child as a dependent and they paid the tuition, they can claim the Hope Credit (if student qualifies), Lifetime Learning Credit, or the Tuition and Fees deduction.

They would not be able to claim the Tuition and Fees Deduction if the student had paid the tuition, but they could still claim the credits in this case.

P.S.. The 1098-T always comes in the student's name with their SS# no matter who paid the tuition.
