    Eic Question

Grandson is 17 years of age. Earns $8,500 and furnishes over 1/2 his own support.
Lives with grandparents for entire year.

Cannot be claimed as dependent of grandparents due to furnishing over 1/2 support.

Grandparents income meets necessary requirements for EIC.

Can grandson claim his own exemption and still be claimed by grandparents for the EIC on their return.

    TTB page 11-5 says:

The support test for dependents does not apply to EIC—a child who
meets all other requirements and provides more than half of his
or her own support can be a qualifying child for EIC.

In other words, claiming a dpendency exemption and claiming a qualifying child for EIC are separate processes and have distinct criteria. So, yes, a QC who claims his own exemption can be claimed for EIC, if the other requirements are met.

Earl> be sure to review what goes into support.. $8,500 should be easy to beat just with providing a room in Grandparents home.........
