    Amscot Story

Just had a new client referred by another client. This couple moved to Florida in 2006 in the fall from New York.

So they went to Amscot to get their taxes prepared last year. Amscot told them that they didn't know how to do New York state tax return. They sent the man away to do some research and find out how to do it and wanted him to do it himself.

That is real good business practices. I'll charge you and you go do it yourself.

They don't even know how to do a federal one either. I've seen too many (after the fact) that they have put Sch C income as wages, didn't do a Sch C or SE, etc. They seem to be "real bad" in the Tampa area.

I looked up Amscot on the web and they appear to be a provider of financial services to low income people and possibly even a predator on such people. I say predator because they offer payday loans which I wish would be abolished along with refund anticipation loans. I have to admit that I am surprised that people with the means to move from NY to Florida would try to use this company. It does seem like to me that if you are going to get your taxes done by a storefront company at least go to a storefront that specializes in taxes. The company where I started out in this business had out of state returns done by very qualified people who also carefully checked the Federal Return. It sometimes took a couple weeks to get the returns done but I am only aware of one case in eleven years where they were not done correctly and that case, was based on faulty information given by me to the Foreign States Preparer. I thought I got that info from the client but I could have misunderstood. Anyway the error was quickly fixed.
