Recently, my client went to an attorney to bail out of a partnership. He told her to show up at his office around 11 A.M. and he would get to her when he could, which was about 2:00 P.M. She took the whole day off work to meet with him.
She had guaranteed considerable indebtedness and was planning how to bail out of the debt too. I told her she needed to see me, pronto. Then proceeded to try to make an appointment.
I am busy this time of year (as most of you can understand), nonetheless proposed several dates after her work. "Wellllll, not Wednesday night, we go to church. Welllll, not Thursday night, my son has a little league game. Welllll, not Tuesday, my daughter has to go to a ballet recital, on and on and on. You get the picture. All this after making heroic efforts to meet with her attorney.
I put up with this for a few minutes, and finally said, "I'm going to leave this up to you, but I don't want you to think I can prevent you from paying if you don't discuss your arrangements with me." This got her attention, and we met.
After our meeting, I asked her if the attorney had told her she would have to pay on $100K income for bank forgiveness. She said, "No, nothing about taxes. Not really much about anything at all, for that matter."
