Client has 3 W-2's, 2 with the correct SS# and 1 with the wrong SS#. I have already informed him to call employer to get W-2C for SSA purposes, but need to know can we go ahead and file with the incorrect W-2 assuming we use the correct SS#.

Often times clients will fail to do what you ask of them and then proceed to blame you when things go wrong. Good Luck -
I had the same situation last year. The employer assured the client they corrected their mistake and filed a new W-2. This was in early Feb. I efiled in March and it was rejected. I called the employer and had them send to the client a corrected W-2 and it went through the day the client received it.Comment

File it If you look on the back of the W-2 under notice to employee "corrections" it states for the employee to correct copies B,C and 2 and notify employer to file W-2C. If you are filing electronically it is not going to hold up a refund. IRS doesn't even have any W-2 info yet and matches probably don't happen until April or later.Comment

that was my thought

Wrong Ss# On W-2
ACCORDING TO IRS AGENT ON 12-19-2007 E-FILE PHONEFORUM SEMINAR, WE ARE ABLE TO E-FILE RETURNS WITH INCORRECT SS#'S WITHOUT WAITING FOR A W-2C. INSTRUCTIONS ARE TO ENTER THE SS# AS IT IS PRINTED ON THE W-2 IN OUR SOFTWARE INPUT SHEETS, BUT TO BE SURE THAT THE 1040 SS# IS CORRECT FOR PAGE 1. IF YOU CAN FIND ACCESS TO THAT SLIDE INFO FROM THAT SEMINAR IT WAS ON SLIDE 8. I FILED A RETURN YESTERDAY THIS WAY AND WAITING ON IRS ACCEPTANCE. I WILL KEEP YOU UPDATED AS TO MY OUTCOME.
Sorry about the all caps. Checked today and not-surprisingly, the return was rejected. When I get this resolved, I'll update. I must have been mistaken about the type of w-2/1099 number errors that will be that easy to e-file. I put a call in to the seminar question help line and waiting on answer.Comment

I've got one coming in where his stepmom already called and asked what to do because they spelled his name wrong, and he's been trying to get the employer to fix it. finally got the paychecks right, but the W-2 came out wrong. I shouldn't have a problem filing, but there will be a name/number mismatch eventually.Comment

Should not be a problem
Companies that e-file the W-2's (I do it here) do not have to e-file them with the SSA until March 31. This means that the SSA does not even have a copy of the W-2 yet so they will not be matching SSN and Names at this point.I would put a favorite quote in here, but it would get me banned from the board.Comment

they changed it?
Used to be last day of February. Glad SSA did that.ChEAr$,
