The jury has been deliberating for two days. I suppose that's a good sign for Snipes, although I certainly hope not.

What an idiot (Snipes). I remember seeing him on Letterman a few years ago and thinking he wasn't the sharpest knife in drawer. I can't believe tax protesters like this think they'll actually win. The IRS could use the dumbest and least experienced prosecutors they have and easily win a case like this.

You'd think so, but why is it taking the jury two days to decide he's guilty?

Guilty of three lesser charges, gets 3 years

Well, I just heard on the news that Snipes was found guilty of three lesser misdemeanor charges, but cleared of tax evasion and the other more serious charges. What a crock! Apparently, he can be sentenced to up to three years in prison. I suppose that means 3 hours in prison or very minimal time. Sorry, my heading is wrong.

What kind of message does that send to the masses of honest, hard-working folks, that pay their taxes each year? Fairness in our justice system doesn't seem to exist anymore.

I just checked the story on CNN. Unbelievable. It's hard to understand a handslap in a situation like this.

Must of been OJ's jury ... at least there the glove did not fit

As I have read the case, the defense did not even call any witnesses.

No, they didn't present any witnesses or even much of a case. It was all on that 'he was stupid, but stupidity is not fraud'. And only three counts of failing to file? He hasn't filed since 1998 I think, and requested a complete refund of 1997 (by filing a fraudulent 1040X). I hope he has to pay all taxes, interest and penalties though..usually these guys don't get off without paying. Did you see the crap about how poor wesley, he tried for years to just get the IRS to answer his tax protester arguements straight up, and all they did was send him bills....

Can you see on all the tax protester sites..they will be trumpeting how he was acquitted (of fraud & conspiracy, but not mention what he was convicted of) and also not mention how Kahn and the accountant WERE convicted of fraud and conspiracy.

Here's a link to some of the crap he sent to the IRS http://www.thesnipestrial.com/snipes29pp.pdf

looks like boilerplate tax protest stuff. He didn't even fill in the dates of correspondence. All he wanted was to get some answers as to why they kept on asking him to do something he wasnt' required to do under law!!!

Being acquitted of tax evasion and getting out of paying all back taxes, plus interest, plus penalties are two different things.

What the tax protester websites won’t tell you is every case where their guy won a get out of jail free card, the IRS still collects their tax, plus interest, plus penalties.

No jury can get you off the hook for actually having to pay your taxes.

Our court system needs fixing. Think of all the poor saps, elderly citizens, etc. that are frightened by the receipt of an IRS letter and certain they'll be headed for jail if the claim a deduction erroneously. Or, those that won't take a deduction for fear it will make them more vulnerable to an audit. I'm sure there have been many people driven to the brink of suicide by the IRS. This was their opportunity to show the public they mean business. How on earth could the prosecutor's lose such an easy case? How much time will Snipes actually serve? Near Ocala, Florida there's a young mentally challenged black man serving a very long sentence for theft of a six pack of beer from neighbor's garage. I don't remember the exact term, but it's much longer than 3 years. What was this jury thinking? Are they idiots? I might add this is especially annoying with all the new preparer penalties and requirements.

I suppose next Snipe's will submit an Offer In Compromise, and settle with the IRS for pennies on the dollar. My understanding is he owes about $35 million with interest and penalties.

Oh, I'm sure he doesn't qualify for an OIC...maybe a payment plan.

What I don't understand is the fraud. He shoved this %^& on his employees as well, refusing to withhold taxes and telling them they shouldn't file, and when one disagreed he formed a new corporation and forged her name on documents making her an officer, and thus potentially liable for unpaid payroll taxes!
