    Long before electronic filing

Code Section 6107 tells us what to do, viz. either copies of returns or a list (names &
SSN) for three years after tax return period.

Earliest date I can remember is sometime about 1976 when this became mandated.

      Taxpayer Copy

I hand the client their copy of the return.

If they want me to store it for them, in their folder, I will.

      No big deal.

Most of our clients want us to shred the copy they would normally keep for themselves, so they send it back to us.

I would never offer to shred or destroy or indicate in any way that I did not expect my clients to keep copies of their own tax return in their own files. That is one of the indicators that it is their tax return and not mine. I give my clients a pdf copy as well as a paper copy.
