    California

I am an EA in NC but I have picked up for the new year two clients who will need to file in CA. I thought that in order to sign a CA Return as paid preparer I had to register with the State but I can't seem to find any information on doing that. I would ideally like to efile the returns but if necessary I guess my printer still works. Any advice or assistance would be appreciated.

I researched this a couple of times previously. I seem to remember that as long as you don't have an office in CA you aren't required to register. Maybe some of the CA posters on the board (oh how we miss Jainen!) can help.

      Ca

Well, I'm not Jainen, but you don't need to register with CA, if you are OK with the IRS.

If you want to verify, call 1-(916) 845-7057

        Thank you both

I feel much better knowing that I won't get my clients in trouble or run into trouble myself. Now all I have to do is prepare the wretched California returns correctly.

            TY I will

It looks like both returns are fairly simple - wages, self employment, dependents, the usual credits, and so on ...... issues that happen over and over and are well covered in the standard sources of info such as TTB and the Pubs of the taxing agencies. The reason I went into tax work instead of medicine was that it seems to me that too often Medics have only seconds to act in order to prevent harm. This business allows more time to read and think and ask questions of colleagues. Can you imagine a Doctor posting on a bulletin board "I have a patient who is choking. Can you refresh me on the Heimlich Maneuver?"

They would need a book that answers their question really really really fast!

                CA Forms to use

Erchess, if those two clients are CA residents, you will use Form 540 and Form 540 Schedule CA and, perhaps, others. But if those clients are non-residents of California, or if they were part-year residents of California in 2007, then the primary form to use is Form 540NR, coupled with Form 540NR Schedule CA. There are also "NR" versions of several other common forms.

You may view or download forms and instructions from the California Franchise Tax Board's web site ...

If you prepare paper returns and there are W-2s (or 1099s with CA withholding), attach the W-2s to California Schedule W-2 CG. Don't staple them to F-540 or F-540NR.

                  Good Points

Roland. Thank you very much. One moved from California in the late fall while the other is still very much there and has no plans to leave other than for temporary reasons. I will be doing the returns on a computer. On the return for the one that moved, I will have input from the prior year preparer who indicated willingness to walk another professional through California but no willingness to do NC. I personally think that's funny since computer software makes NC childishly easy, but hey I am not looking a gift horse in the mouth.

                    I also

                    Erchess,

As well as Dennis, please feel free to contact me as well if you run into a California filing isuue or have questions, I have practiced in California for more than 25 years.

I just relocated to NC, and I agree NC seems to be relatively easy compared to California, but I have been familiarizing myself over the last 2 years with NC reporting.

I really appreciate all the offers of help

and I will reach out when the time comes. Just for the record, here are the situations

                      One

Single Female / Children grown / lived in CA for years and no plans to leave / Income in the high 20K range from job in Doctor's office / also kicked off part time career as Real Estate Agent no income yet lots of expenses

                      Two

Married Couple / two dependent children, in I think MS and Elem and may have a third older child I have not met / Mom's mother is often at the house but I don't know if she lives with them or not / Moved from CA in August / Both artsy type ppl - in CA he was the head of theater for a school district and she was a college professor of theater or music or something and they moved to NC so she could take a position at a local college. He is currently a house husband I have the impression he's not dying to get back into his career.

As you might gather these are people I have met socially who asked me to take over as their tax professional but I have not yet had my intake interviews with either. The one who lives in CA will be mailing me her stuff.
