    state income tax

    my son relocated to a new job from Illinois to Washington dc and lives in Maryland. does that mean that i have to file state income tax in all three states and will he get credit in the state he does not live in, his income comes from wash d c and he live in Baltimore Maryland, i still don't know where the corp headquarters, ...jim s

    Sounds like a part year IL and part year MD resident returns, and a nonresident DC.

      Many employers in the DC area will withhold based upon residency. I know the Federal Gov't does (as I used to be one of them). Unique in that they did have an area agreement when I lived in the area. Need to check with his employer.

        DC non-residents do not have to file a DC return.

          thank you very much for the input, it now appears that i have to get some books from Maryland, D C . and Illinois for part year resident, and i forgot to say that he owns property in Illinois.

            The TaxBook's "All States Edition" can be very helpful. It offers a wealth of information on all of the State's an who must file - resident/nonresident etc....
