Just wondering, has anyone around here ever used Tax Software Xpress via TRX Alliance? I'm not switching this year but am considering buying this and just giving it a look over throughout the season to see how they do. I did this last year to another company and they failed so horribly it wasn't even funny.

Tax Software Xpress?

Ever hear of Orrtax?
You can buy their software directly from them or you can buy somewhat repackaged versions from several other vendors, one of whom is TRX Alliance. In all cases we are dealing with well made low end software that does not make as many calculations for you or have as many diagnostics to catch your errors or other bells and whistles as higher end software. For example, if you try to do a Social Security Lump Sum in TRX you will have to complete three worksheets by hand and enter a couple of numbers from them as overrides to numbers the program calculates. However, if fewer than half of your clients make as much as $75K I suspect that you may be very happy with this software. I am switching this year from Intellitax version of Orrtax to TRX and I also have the pay per return product from Thompson Ultratax for anything complicated that comes up.

?
Intellitax and TRX are the same thing? I'll try their demo.
I downloaded a Demo of TRX and will probably do a few of last years returns on them. I'm not switching this year but maybe next season. I'm with ATX for now but they seem very uninterested in keeping me as a client. In fact I'd say they are trying their hardest to get me to switch to someone else.
Along with ATX last year I purchased TaxExact to see what they were like. Ouch that was ugly. I knew there was going to be a problem when I found a problem and instead of fixing the entire program via the update, they just fixed MINE. It went downhill very quickly after that. To say TaxExact is horrible would be a huge understatement.

are they the same?
Are TaxAct and TaxExact the same thing? Are they even related?
By the way, Intellitax insists to me that they are better than TRX but when you read the license agreement on Intellitax you see that it is Orrtax. However the two programs do have somewhat different appearance. I have to say that Intellitax has great customer support. I left them because TaxAct has more capability (such as state business returns) for about half the price.

Intellitax, Orrax and TRX

Orrtax is the name of a company.
IntelliTax is the name of a product.
Tax Refund Xpress is the name of a reseller.
Longer version:
In the beginning there was DOS, and the tax program was called OrrTax. It handled only personal tax returns, with no entity modules. Then a Windows program was developed, and it was called Intellitax. It did not appear that the internals of OrrTax and Intellitax were at all similar. Their client data files were entirely different. DOS client files could be converted to Windows, but not the reverse. Both the DOS and the Windows programs continued to be marketed, and were actually distributed on the same disk. Sometimes the DOS version was called "IntelliTax Classic." [We had major problems with the Windows version for the first two years and so continued to use the DOS version.]
Today, if you click on either http://www.orrtax.com or http://www.intellitax.com you go to the same site. It has a top banner saying "Orrtax Software Solutions" and "IntelliTax is User Friendly" There are several packages available - personal, business, etc. There is no mention of a DOS version.
TRX resells the IntelliTax software under their own name at a significant discount.
I actually received the 2007 TRX CD today. It is version 0.0 and is used to set up the directory structure and proforma 2006 returns. Apparently all subsequent releases can be downloaded.
