How much will you charge me this year?

When I get this question, I always say the same old thing. If everything is the same as last year it'll just be a bit higher than that.

Client called to say he is now disabled and hasn't been able to work but is receiving money. We talked about the types of income and if they were taxable.

"So, now that I'm disabled what will you charge me because I can't afford anything."

I changed my story and said " With all the time you now have why not do your taxes yourself. You can even efile on line yourself! I'm sure you can do it."

Now I see with all the headaches, and expenses rising, liability rising, more time consuming research, that I have become totally unfeeling toward the plight of my fellow man.

I would then have asked him if he will get his rent free, his groceries and household supplies free, his insurance free,...............

Why should I do your return for free?

That is the same response I give to non-profits who want me to prepare their 990/990EZ for free or for a reduced fee. Especially when the executives/directors are drawing fairly good salaries.

No one can give me an answer!
