    Internet Taxes

Been hearing on radio that Congress is dealing with the expiration of the internet ban on taxes.

News stories tend to compress everything into "soundbytes" meaning most of the boring items of real substance are left out so they can zoom on to the next "soundbyte." Good strategy for retaining laymen listeners.

But not so good about informing those of us with a real stake in the matter.

Does anyone have anything of substance they can share with us regarding this?

    Google "internet taxes"

    Lots of reading there.

Some internet sales are taxed. If the seller has a physical presence in your state like Barnes and Noble, you pay tax, but if you order from Amazon they probably have no physical presence and do not have to charge tax.

Sure, but you are supposed to pay excise taxes to your state. A lot of state returns now have a line for 'did you buy anything on which you owe excise taxes?' that's where you put your internet purchases, or at least the tax owed on previously untaxed purchases. Not a lot of eforcement...yet. But here in CA they went after people that bought cigarettes online and didn't pay all the excise taxes on cigs. They just got the sales records from the companies and sent bills to everyone in CA. And for cigs, it isn't just the sales tax....
