    Draft Tax Forms

The IRS site has a section called "Draft Tax Forms."

The most recent 1040 I could find has a date of 06/08/07.
Any ideas as to how reliable this might be, in particular,
whether the line items are very likely to change?

The final 1040 was posted, as I recall, on 11/01/07.

      it's final

i went to the irs main page a few days ago and typed in "form 1040" i the search box on that page. the first link in the response was the new 2007 form 104, and yes it correlated with the draft form and had all the page number references.

and, there was something i have not seen before. the line for "tuition and fees deduction" (form 1040, line 34) requires a NEW FORM -- form 8917.

make sure your software is up to date.

          AMT Refund

Looks like if you can recover prior years' AMT, any recovery blocked because of excessive other credits is now converted into a "refundable credit." See line 71.
