    Partnership Research

Looking for research sources for partnerships other than Google or IRS. Too bad it's summer now and not very many posters are available.

What do you want to learn?

A good text can be picked up at your local community college bookstore. I recommend West's Federal Taxation (Comprehensive Volume) used in most undergrad level Federal Taxation courses. It has several great sections on partnerships and corps (including a very comprehexive section on S-Corps). Additionally, I am currently taking a class on Corporations and Partnerships in my undergrad studies. This course is more of a legal course, but covers a bit about partnership structure. I'll get the coursebook title and forward it.

While many of us are "out of the loop", we're still here to answer your questions.

Thank you so much, JoshinNC, I just ordered this book at Amazon for a little over $8.00. Was very surprised to get it for amount.

        Wow!

I paid $150 for it a couple of years ago.

It really is a great text. Very informative.

Coming back to my post. I am glad I paid only $8 because I am rather disappointed.

BUT I found everything my heart desires in the audit manual for partnerships. I got really exited, almost like reading a mystery the other way round: The mystery gets less and less. Just thought to let all of you know who still look for more research.

If you want to understand the tax ramifications of partnerships I can't think of a better text.

Look on the back of the book and give me the ID #. I'll compare it to mine. I can't see how you would be disappointed with this text if you want to learn to understand partnership taxation.

              Josh,
Would you post the ISBN #. I would be interested in looking at getting the book. I didn't see one on Amazon for such a low price as Gabriele found. I would like to make sure I am looking at the same one you are recommending.

              Thank Youi

Josh, Maybe I didn't say the right thing. My specific issue was addressed in depths. I didn't say the book is not good. ISBN 0-324-22090-1. My book is heavily used and marked and it is from 2005, which might explain the price. I didn't care about the latest issue since I most mostly interested in some basic topics but more thoroughly.

                  Gabriele,

                  What about NATP?

They have courses for CPE, scroll down to the 3 choices for Partnerships. Maybe you don't want to spend that much, you can call them and ask to just buy the books.

I would suggest PPC 1065 deskbook. I got their deskbooks for s-corporations and have been very happy. Just wish I would have bought the CD instead. I know it costs more but well worth it.

If you go on Half.com you can find the West Taxations books from $13.95 to $40. Just type in the ISBN Gabrielle listed or that maybe Josh will list.

JG, You are right, if I can, I like to get good references that fit my budget. Sometimes that doesn't work. I checked out the website and it appears to be thorough education. Have you ever taken any of their courses? Which ones and what is your experience?

                      Thank you.

Yes, I went to a few of their 1040 seminars and 1040 extra seminars over the years. One year I bought a Partnership video of a lecture to a class. That was interesting to me because I could play the parts over again that were confusing. I don't know if they do that anymore.

As a member they send monthly reports and Journals a few times a year. I really like their court cases summaries. I also like the quiz in the Journals. They also have a member's hotline that I use a lot, mostly off season when I struggling with the harder returns. It costs a bit ($21.50 a question) so I only use it when I can recoup because of higher priced tax returns.

Also on the website, if you are a member they have some worksheets that I sometimes find helpful. They also have a research question data base for free - questions that have been previously asked.

This is not an ad, but it is the most helpful organization that I've been a member. Of course not counting this board which is extremely helpful and free to boot. (And we all know that boot is not free - tax humor.)

NATP offers several excellent tax courses. Their fees are more than fair IMO. I've taken their online courses as well as attended live classes, both were full of great information.
