    Politics

The purpose of this forum is to discuss tax issues. While it’s impossible to completely separate tax issues from political issues, in recent days tax issues have been used as a springboard for engaging in partisan political debates. This is not the appropriate forum to engage in such arguments.

Our goal is to allow information and ideas to flow as freely as possible. However, maintaining a high level of discussion does not happen by itself. We ask that all participants cooperate with keeping the discussions on track. The level of freedom that we allow will be a direct result of the level of consideration of the participants.

We appreciate the participation of so many knowledgeable tax professionals. Please understand that our goal is to maintain the highest possible standard of discussions.

    Thank you for your cooperation.

I for one do not use this Board to express political views and do not think such political posts have any business being here. Off topic postings I simply ignore. Paul, your warning is appreciated.

A local editorial writer always ends his columns:

Watch out for poly-ticks, dog ticks and sand fleas.

      It's good advice!

Paul - I appreciate your efforts to return this to a mostly tax forum.
Only in government or politics is a "cut in spending" really an increase. It's just not as much of an increase as they wanted it to be, therefore a "cut".

            a matter of law

Taxation is a matter of law, and in a democracy that is inseparable from politics. Some things in the tax code are so weird that they ONLY make sense from a political viewpoint. For example, understanding the long history of Section 1031 is very useful in applying it.

But democracy is not the same as partisanship, and when the discussion turns to the broad issues of party politics and specific candidates, that is too far off topic. Unfortunately, EIC lends itself to just such a turn.

I admit and apologize for my participation in the thread that offended some people.

Although I consider politics a worthy subject to discuss, it does not mean that the Editors have to permit it on this message board. Since we are guests I believe we should defer to the wishes of the people who provide this board. Anyone unwilling to do so is free to start his own message board.

Mr. Roberts did not say you cannot discuss political issues. He said enough is enough when you engage in partisan political debates. Is it possible to discuss political issues as they relate to the tax code without hurling insults at one another?

If you have information to help or guide others, or intelligent advice or discussion, why would you feel it necessary to make personal insults to others? I'm afraid that I just don't understand why anyone would even want to take this approach. Also, if you feel that you will get "cut down" when asking a question, many times the question will not be asked.

Thank you for your post! I so agree, particularly about asking a "question"
