[QUOTE=erchess;38704]some posts in this thread suggesting that Jose Padilla is innocent of wrongdoing and that he was tortured.

As to the innocent of wrongdoing, I vaguely remember a fellow who was tried for having been part of the 9/11 Plot when the best evidence suggested that the real plotters viewed him as too unstable to be part of what they were doing. Is that Padilla?

    /QUOTE]

No. I believe that was Zaccarious Massoui (sp?).

      Wrong, that was Rosi O'Donell.

I would have responded with just a smiley - but that would be most likely be too short to post.

Thanks for the welcome injection of humor. I was bumming myself out.

Just a followup. Since no one guessed. The author is Hubert H. Humphrey.

Just so no one has to guess about the part you left out with the convenient ellipsis, here it is:

"This is not to say that firearms should not be very carefully used and that definite rules of precaution should not be taught and enforced."

Well, I can't disagree with that either. Like criminals not having guns. Let's enforce that.

Maybe if we impose a penalty tax on criminals for using guns in a crime, then the behavior of criminals will change and we can all hold hands and hug a tree and celebrate peace on earth.

I prefer sarcasm that is used to reveal a truth, not to hide one. What turns a robbery into a homicide is not the criminal's behavior. It is the gun.

No, it's the bullet that hits a vital organ.

Put a penalty tax on bullets that are to be used in a homicide, and any murderer will think twice before pulling the trigger.

Liquor has killed more men than bullets

But, I would rather be full of liquor than full of bullets.

                          new penalties

Everybody get a grip. Consider the Alternative Minimum Tax. Do you seriously think that Congress 'forgot' to index the exemption amount for inflation??? Is it a mere coincidence that the AMT is projected to bring into the Treasury, within the next 10 years, ONE TRILLION dollars? Do you, really?

Do you seriously think that a majority of Members of Congress gave any serious thought to this question? That they even read what they were voting on?

I think he meant Humbert Humbert. Character in a Nabokov novel.
