So my client brings in this Form 990 forms package (I guess they must send it to every organization, even those that used a paid preparer last year) and it has an oversized envelope stapled into it (so you have to use a staple remover to get it out, and now it has a couple holes in it but it's too small anyway) that is pre-addressed to IRS at "ODGEN UT".

I bet this won't happen if Mitt Romney gets elected president.

Is this a collector's item? Should I try selling it on eBay ?

This is an interesting point. I presume that the client gave the item to you. What are the rules regarding the receipt of gifts from our clients? Did you have the item appraised and deduct its value from your fee?

Anything my clients give me is compensation, not gift. Especially when they give me their promise to pay. That's why I am always a paid preparer, even when I have no cash.

Ebay is a good idea just to establish the FMV of the compensation you have to report.
