FunCPE is good
In addition to the Wiseguides http://www.paychex.com/wiseguides/wiseguides.aspx link that I posted on the other forum, I'll also recommend FunCPE. I tried their ethics course last year. Text was Circular 230. I think it cost $25 for four hours.

Hopefully
Hopfully TMI (The Tax Book) is going to provide us with more CPE options. I have not completed the CPE that was ordered with the new book, but will shortly.
I have used FUN CPE, and CPE Depot. They were inexpensive, and I found that the testing and source material were good. CPE courses contained a lot of material of Danny Santucci (Calif), which I recognized from prior seminars.

I was looking at the CPE Depot site. You have to join. Membership fee $149.
What do I get for that? All courses I want? Can you see a list of the courses before you join?
Anyone with any info on this? You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted, then used against you.

Someone
should write a book on the CPE choices out there to guide professionals to the CPE that's right for them.
Someone should also invent a telephone that has a cord running from the handset to the base so that you don't wander out of range of the base or forget where you put the handset ;-)

Suggestion(?)-Question(?
Originally posted by WhiteOleander View PostThanks Dennis. I'm going to look into that further.
I have found the information in NATP materials very helpful. There site and emails are showing On-Line CPE offerings but I haven't even looked at it because I, also, am still trying to finish the one I got from the TaxBook. I figured I would think about CPE after I finish the 9 returns I have sitting in the office. You do have to be a member to get a good price but non-members can attend or order their materials.

three kinds of subject
>>the CPE that's right for them<<
I think of CPE in terms of three kinds of subject matter. First, there's the basic rules of whatever topic. Last year I did some review of travel & entertainment and some new learning about corporations. I always do those by mail or online because it's just reading the book. Generally that's the cheapest way to accrue the required minimum credit hours.
Then there are courses that offer analysis and help prioritize the rules. Usually those are best with a live speaker, but sometimes you will find good write-ups. For example, a few years ago P.E.S. put a dozen of the old Danny Santucci seminars on a CD in PDF format. Usually such classes are more expensive so I often don't bother paying extra for CPE credit.
Don't forget the annual update. It's an all-day affair for California preparers, and to my mind Spidell is the only choice. The class is a mix of new rules with advice for applying them.

I'll second this one. Krusemark is by far the cheapest I could find. They have a 2007 online course for 24 hours WITH 2 hours of ethics for $60.95. You just can't beat that price anywhere that I've found. I've been doing that course each year and then spending money on whatever specific education I need without regard to hours. Imagine - less than $3 per hour for continuing education!

IRS Teleconferences
The IRS provides free one hour teleconferences which are sometimes quite informative and the subject matter is usually timely. A few months ago there was one on the telephone tax refund and another on energy tax credits. It is a good way to get a few extra credits added to your purchased courses.
