    Liberty Tax Service

I thought my eyes were deceiving me the other day in Huntsville, AL. I was driving and couldn't really focus on anything but the traffic.

But I saw the same thing this morning in Nashville. A woman dressed up as the Statue of Liberty in a light green coat, pointed crown, waving at traffic. Everything but the torch. The proverbial walking billboard of "Eat at Joe's" fame, except she was promoting "Liberty Tax Service."

A friend of mine in Chattanooga works for a Liberty office there. Apparently, the co-founder of Jackson-Hewitt, Hewitt himself, lost 51% control of the company a few years ago and launched out on his own. That office has a copy of TTB at every desk.

Hewitt occasionally shows up at Liberty stores, and the people are agog. The ultimate promoter with personal savvy and magnetism whether he knows the first thing about taxes or not. Liberty is experiencing explosive growth and is now #3 among nationwide tax prep offices, approaching 2500 stores.

Any one else out there seen the Statue of Liberty? What is Liberty doing that is so different from everyone else??

    Thanks, Snag

Actually he sold out to Cendant for a good chunk of change. He could not compete for a specified time and when the time ran out, he started Liberty.

Your comment as to how much he knows about taxes reminds me that shortly after the sale of the company, he ended up, if I remember correctly, having to pay many thousands of dollars to the IRS because of his mishandling of some type of sale on his personal return.

Only in government or politics is a "cut in spending" really an increase. It's just not as much of an increase as they wanted it to be, therefore a "cut".

I work at Liberty Tax Service. The difference is we are out there talking with people every day. Through our wavers. Yes, the tax book is at nearly every desk, and the software is on every computer. The pub 17 and the liberty tax books are also on every desk in software form. Another big difference is that most of the workers here have worked for our competitors for years. Experience is a must here. So is research, if one of us needs help we have loads of software, tax books, irs website as our browser homepage, zip code references in the form of postal service website, mapquest to research the milages our clients claim various reliable sources. And yes I too have waved!!

Something that I should not do, is go by memory, especially at this time of the year. I had worked for them shortly before the sale and kept up for a while. Hewitt was no longer CEO of the company when it sold. After season, I plan to look up more info because I still think I read about how much money he got from the sale.

Technically, they did not sell to Cendant. The agreement was with another company that was merged with Cendant before the sale completed.

One thing that I find ironic, I think that Canada was one of the original strongholds for Liberty. I wonder how the Statue of Liberty goes over with them.

I remember it well, in the summer of '97 JH stock rose from $2.12 in April to $48 by Aug when Cendent announced the purchase of JH. Talk about pumping a stock! Hewitt had a no compete clause so he went to Canada and started Liberty with the same business model as he had at JH. When the NC ran out, he started franchising Liberty here in the USA. Exact same biz model as JH, target the EITC, RAL crowd and use corny gimmicks to do it. Promise is that you can buy a franchise and not be a tax professional, then you hire at minimum wage and give them 8 hours of data entry training to input information from the customer. I wonder how long before Liberty hits the headlines with a fraud charge like JH has going right now?

                Jade-

All Liberty offices aren't the same. The experience levels vary by office. For example, I'm fully aware of one start-up office that had -zero- tax experience (yes, none...nada) on their staff (including the Manager). The staff received only the "quickie" course they offered because they were late finding office space, etc.

Every office is different no matter what company you are working for. Can I beleive that, that office was not prepared and should have been. Yes It was set up by humans which are unrelaible at best. I was stating what I know about Liberty, which was the idea of the opening thread.

                        Liberty Tax Service

In Largo, Florida, Liberty had their wavers. The City Commission forbad such actions in its sign ordinance. I have heard nothing more about Liberty. They do have offices here though.

They have a office here. Put in about two years ago... with H&R Block in the building right behind them I've seen the wavers also. Feel sorry for them when it is so cold and the wind is blowing.

Yes, I have seen the "wavers" all dressed up in their "Liberty" suits in parts of Orange County, on street corners, in parking lots, etc!

They are very active this time of year!
