    uniform cleaning

How do you all handle the cleaning of uniforms when the cleaning is done at home. I seem to remember some time ago that I read that on audit IRS will disallow cleaning if it is not done professionally where there is a separate charge.

    Upkeep of uniforms

Pub. 529 states that you can deduct the cost of upkeep of uniforms. It doesn't say they have to be professionally cleaned. I use $2.50 as the cost of a load of laundry and calculate annual expense based on how frequently the uniform is washed.

      I have a client

who, back when her husband was a postman (letter carrier), and she did his uniforms at
home, she (1) bought separate detergents just for this and (2) use washer and dryer
electric consumption figures in order to pro rate share of electric bill, and (3) similarly
      pro rated water bill.

All I could say was "wow!"

They're retired now, and when they drive up here for the day, he always brings me a sack
of home baked cookies, enough for about three weeks of tax season "lunches".
Just finished lunch today in fact.
