    Wrong SS # on W-2 for 2006 and 2005

    Client's W-2 has wrong SS #...

    1. I'm thinking I report her wages as if the number was right and get company to issue a new W-2 c to the IRS. I do not have to wait on the W-2 (corrected version) before I file... Is that right?

    2. Last year another preparer did return, did not catch wrong social security number... Does company need to send a W-2 c for last year as well ?

Thanks...If there's another way to do this let me know.

You can go ahead and file the return but the SSN question

should be straightened out before he retires. One way to accomplish this would be to get the company to issue corrected Forms W-2 and then make sure that the wages are shown on his next statement from the Social Security Administration. If there is any problem getting the company to issue corrected Forms, you or your client can contact the Social Security Administration and straighten things out. I am not sure what is involved in doing this but I understand that it is possible.
