    Final Streach

Well we are in the final streach and then we are all done. Has the season been good for everyone? Did people take a long time to come in this year because of the early time change this year? Have a good rest of the season.

Yeah, just think. We can spend the rest of the year going broke.

It's no wonder that most of us who have stayed in the tax business find ways to make money in the off-season. CPAs get other accounting and financial work, some tax guys use their office to sell real estate or insurance, etc.

Reckon if they changed the April 15 deadline and allowed people until their birthday to file, we would have income year-round if we were really good. Not really a bad idear, except people under the gun to file might get married to extend their due date, right??

      Really Long and Stressful

I say it every year, that the current year is worse than the year before. But I retract all of those statements, and state that 2006 filings in 2007 are the most challenging yet.

The mortgage interest limitation on all of the refinance and equity cash outs, have really proven to be challenging, not only for taxes, but also because I have to question clients, and they are wondering why.

The carryover on the dependent and HOH issues from 2005, and now the charitable contributions.

And, seemed like almost all of my clients have been really late in either scheduling appts or mailing in!

PS I have always stated that it would be so nice if the government would figure out a different due date of 4/15 for all returns. We all know that we file extensions. I guess we should be thankful that they eliminated the 8/15 due date and now we have a 6 month extension. Birthdates sound good! Gosh do you think we could eliminate some errors on returns, and maybe have more taxpayer compliance??

        I did something new

this year. During the day I take a break and go to my favorite cigar lounge. It is something that helps me take the stress away. On Saturday's weather permitting I ride my Harley to work also a good stress reliever.

Lastly but most importantly my wife prays for me.

It has been pretty good so far, although I will not be "done". Last year I was busy year round with tax preparation (extensions, back years, OICs, etc). The local Block district rep was kind enough to tell me last week that I "killed" them this year and that nationally, Block had a very bad year.

I work year around also. I've got extensions and then payroll quarterly forms. I have had ALOT of people not come by yet or was late getting information in. I've still got about 53 not come by. I believe atleast 10 will not come back. Had alot of new customers. Several new S-Corporations. Alot of strange returns too. People with bankruptcy, having to do several years returns, etc. I had one customer call to tell me she was bringing by her tax papers. Never came. The next week I found a certified letter from the IRS. It was address to them, they had signed for it, and did NOT open it. I opened it and it was dated in December. A collections letter! I just could not believe they did not even open the letter. I haven't even called her back about it. Oh another thing I have a old customer using my address and telephone number on credit applications.... nice huh.

Overall though it has been a really good year. Made more money honey.

              Sayonara Forever

This has been a very low key season. Sold my practice and am merely helping with transition. I've done maybe 30 returns. Now that I'm officially old (have received my Medicare card), I'm retiring as of 4/17/07. Now, the rest of you keep working so I can continue to receive these nice Social Security checks.

                A nice tax season

My 34th actually, and they just keep getting better and easier. This year again,
"take no prisoners." meaning no extensions.

Rosie, I figured I was older than you and now I know how much. I've had my social
security for five years now and can't fund a traditional IRA any longer either. But
my ROTH IRA's are doing rather well.

Clients when they call ask "how late am I there", and I answer "depends", on whether
or not I have a 4 pm appointment. If not, I'll probably steal away about 4:15, 4;30, or so.
Get home in time for happy hour which begins promptly at 5 pm.

My happy hour always starts at 4 pm (one of the better habits I acquired in the military). 'Course, unlike you, I can't step across the GA line and claim I waited until 5.

I am a retired public school educator and clergyman. I enjoy receiving those social security checks and my checks from Michigan Public Schools Retirement system. While it lasted I enjoyed receiving Church Annuity checks as a housing allowance which were tax exempt.

Being a tax Professional is something I enjoy doing that is totally different from my work in public education and in religion. A good fit I must say. I want for nothing else just being busy with tax preparation fits the bill. It is an income producer to offset the loss of a retired clergy housing allowance.

                      Crazy year

This has been a crazy year for me. I had about 10 phone calls yesterday for appointments. Some are just slower this year. But then I have had new clients - referrals from other clients. Also some new bookkeeping accounts right around the end of the year.

This month isn't over on April 17th. For me there will still be quarterly reports to do.

Taking time for some personal things has made my schedule a little tighter. Went to Georgia to a wedding on March 25th, so that weekend was not used for business and then came back and my computer died. My son in law had to put a new motherboard in it. That was STRESSFUL.

This Friday my husband and I are going to St Augustine for the weekend. Our anniversary was the 23 of March and we have been married for 39 years. So he wanted to get away for a weekend and didn't want to wait till May. So I'm taking another weekend off.

Guess I better get back to work now so I can have fun with out worry this weekend.
