    Claimed on another return.

I e-filed a customers return yesteday and I received a rejection notice from the IRS because she was already claimed as a dependent on someone elses return. From what she was telling me prior to this is that her father (who she hasn't seen in 4 years) does not pay for anything. My client has her own job and her own place. What do I do?

    Thanks

Do what your client wants done

I would suggest a paper return with a statement that father did not support the person during the year. Is your client under 18? If yes, you may have to file client as single but claimed on father's return. Where does mother involvement come into play? In anycase you will have to file a paper return and let IRS resolve the matter.

      Last year

Last year she filed by herself also and we didn't have this problem. She doesn't want her father to claim her. She is over 18 and provides full support for herself.

      Thanks

It's more work, but if she will receive a refund you could E-file return w/out the persons exemption and then file a paper 1040X explaining the issue at hand and the fact that she qualifies to take the exemption for herself.

Otherwise I think your only alternative is to file the paper return.
