Do you think an older student could qualify for 2 years Hope credit now while working on a degree but also went to college decades ago for a year? The student dropped out before the year ended then.

Here's another question about that
Gabriele,
I know what you mean about the same things come up at the same time. With your older student did this issue come up?
If the student was was a freshman at the end of 05 and the beginning of 06, a sophomore at the end of 06 and the beginning of 07 could I do the Hope Credit for 2006 and 2007 or should I amend and do the Hope credit in 2005.
You see I took the Lifetime Learning credit last year. I did ask if the client went to college before, but didn't question further and learn that the first and only year was not finished. I just thought they went before and that was that. I don't mind amending, but just wanted to know if I have a choice.
Pub chart asks did the student complete the first 2 years, then was the credit claimed in 2 years, then asks if at least one academic period. 2007 will be yes to those as well as 2005. What do you think about that?
____________
Thanks Gabriele!JG

JG, I was lucky, first time she ever went to college and I gave her the Hope credit.
It's true you have a choice of 3 years. I would do what is most benefical to client. If it takes amending 2005, yes, I would do that, but only if it is really much better than taking the Hope credit in 2007.
