Donated Vehicle

Had a client call and say she was going to be donating her car to her church. I told her the deduction would be limited to what the church sells it for but she said the church had planned on giving it to one of their members who needed a car but could not afford one.

In a case like this do you go by blue book or get an independent appraisal or neither??

The charity will issue you a 1098-C with box 5b check, you then use the FMV or Private Party Value from the Blue Book for your deduction.
