    Correctional Officer

Calif t/p who is a correctional Officer. States that they qualify for some of the same deductions that the Calif Peace Officers do.

The one in question is for 2006 tax year $7 per day meal allowance while on duty. T/P is calculating based on 220 work days and taking 50% (2106 form)

All I find is "NO" per diem. "A bad rumor that won't go away" quoted by NATP article.

Can anyone verify that this is a deductible expense?

    Your client is correct

He gets the same deductions as Police Officers. Meal expenses, and haircuts are not deductible expenses. It is an urban myth that persists among Law Enforcement people, no doubt because some bad preparers will claim these items until theIRS catches up to them. Union dues and unreimbursed uniform purchases are the only things I see as deductible, and blue socks are NOT uniform items.
