    March 2, 1836

It was on this day in 1836 that delegates met at Washington on the Brazos and
declared Texas to be independent of Mexico and to become a separate nation.
There is a big parade and celebration in downtown Austin today.
Anyway, all you people have a great Texas Indendence Day.

    Why celebrate?

I'm not trying to rain on your parade (pun intended), but Texans are Americans. That's no different than those who celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

AH Yes - I remember it like it was yesterday. :-)
Only in government or politics is a "cut in spending" really an increase. It's just not as much of an increase as they wanted it to be, therefore a "cut".

            California

California was also an independent republic.

              Jainen-When

did California decide to join the union and become dependent?
By being an independent republic explains a lot of the orneriness and
              stubborness of the Californians.

                Never

                >>When did California decide to join the union and become dependent?<<

Never. A few months after the huge gold fields were discovered, a handful of corporate robber barons used the American army to grab control of the free country.

                  Well

Not much has changed has it?

It was on this day in 1936 that another memorable (to me) event occurred. I was born. No parades, no celebrations. Bummer. Oh well, could be worse.

                      The Alamo

Yes, not long ago I (again) watched the 1960 John Wayne version of the Alamo with Richard Widmark. It still stirs my blood and should make all Texans proud. San Antonio is one of the few places in America I've never been -- I think I would enjoy the Riverwalk beyond what I could tell.

Texans are proud anyway. One of them told a Kentuckian there was enough gold in Texas to build a gold fence around Ft. Knox. The guy from Kentucky told him to go ahead and build the fence, and Kentucky would buy it.

Happy birthday to Grumpy as well.

Yeah, I liked that one very much too. I'm still waiting for someone like Travis (Lawrence What's-his-name) to come in the office someday and announce -- like he did to Widmark and his fighters - "You are brave and noble (tax preparers) men."

I was in San Antonio once and walked (not floated) down the Riverwalk. Nice place. Also went to the Alamo. Got a kick out of that -- one of the fort's defenders had the same last name as mine, while my wife and I had in past years visited Donner Pass where a survivor of that episode had the same last name as hers. I told her that character must be inherited.

you just (politically correctly) rained on his parade.

                            Alamo

A cab driver picked up a lady at the airport and was taking her downtown.
As they passed the Alamo she asked the cabbie what that building was. He
politely told her that it was the Alamo, the site of a battle between the Mexican
                            army and the Texian troops.
The passenger replied, "yes I have heard of that battle, but did not realize that
the Alamo was built in downtown San Antonio."

By the Way: The Delegates meeting at the conference in Washington on the Brazos
included 5 representing 5 different European countries, 2 from Tennessee, 2 from
Mexico, and 2 from Tejas, both of whom were Mexicans.
