    2000 verison tax prep software

Any thoughts on how to get a 2000 version of a tax prep software for someone who needs to file? I am supposed to met with him, but I am trying to see if I can find a year 2000 tax package.

    Thanks.

It may be difficult depending on the the software you would like to use. I would suggest you try to locate a Package X and do a paper return

Everybody should pay his income tax with a smile. I tried it, but they wanted cash

Thanks, Brian, that is what I was thinking might have to happen.

The IRS and state have prior years' forms and instructions available back to the early 1990's available for download.

Your software company may give you that old year for free if you ask for it. I would inquire, anyway.

Even with a free software package, the time it takes to load it on to your computer and do the return, you could have done it by hand 5 times over.

Do a paper return and be done with it.

              Another approach

Once I needed to do an old return for which I had no software. I did it on a later year's software, then made changes to exemptions and other items that changed, then calculated the tax somehow--I may have had an old tax rate schedule or tax table.

For the most part, the taxable income and deductible expenses are the same each year provided there have been no really major changes such as going to ACRS, then MACRS.

                The quickest place to go..

I found was unclefed.com. They've got the forms, the instructions, the rates and it's all free. Including states.

"The IRS knocked on my door. They want the last 9 years. Can you do that?"

                That was a memorable morning.
