    Firing A Client

    Ran across this on the internet...just use the reason that is most appropriate and delete the others when you address the letter.

    Dear

    Effective [Insert date], we can no longer service your account. We have come to this decision with great reluctance. We are resigning because [delete inappropriate reason e.g.)

    of your continued failure to pay our fee for services in a timely manner;
    we have a conflict of interest between your company and other clients;
    our continuing staffing problems have made it impossible to serve your needs;
    we are changing the types of services we will offer in the future;
    we are concerned about your failure to act upon the recommendations we have made in the past;
    of our desire to decrease the number of clients we will serve in the future.

    We wish to remind you that we will not be performing any services for you after [Insert date], and that there may be tax returns, elections, or other compliance matters for which you are now responsible.

    We recommend that you immediately obtain a new tax preparer, and we will fully cooperate in providing information to your new preparer, within our company guidelines, when your unpaid balance of [Insert amount] is paid in full.

    We appreciate the opportunity to have served you in previous years, and wish you success in your future pursuits.

    Sincerely,
    taxea

      Client's records

      Whether the client pays you or not, you should return any records he left with you. You can withhold any records you prepared until he pays you if you so desire, but you cannot hold any records you did not prepare.

        Firing or Being Fired

        Noel,

        I can understand the position you are in, recently have been in one myself. It seems like the client fired me and I fired him via email almost at the same time.

        It was a new client in 2006, that I bailed out, but come to find out he really wanted me as his office and business manager, which is not what I agreed to. So every week there was another dilemna or outstanding business to take care of, and he had an action list of what was to happen and when it was to happen. After about 9 months of this, I just said NO! Oh forgot to mention he had fired his first accountant for the 2005 period (client had just opened business in 4/05).

        At Any rate, I am now terminated as the second accountant because I can not perform accordingly.

        And it is such a relief!

        So move forward and there are other clients that really do respect you and appreciate what your efforts are. Life is too short and we seem not to be able to bill for every minute that we accomplish an item for some of these business clients.

        Sandy

          Ex-Client called back today

          and asked if I could just do his taxes for 2006 because you know, the old accountant he fired is 75 years old and was able to do his taxes he doesn't see why I can't just do his 1120-S real quick.
          This is a client who on numerous occassions told me how incompetent this old accountant was and that he was paying way too much in taxes (his Dad told him he was) and needed to find someone that would do some tax planning etc...
          But now all of a sudden, when he wants to let me know how easy my job really is, he compares me to the guy he fired and that he doesn't see why there would be a problem.

          Man, if it wasn't for clients, my job would be a breeze. LOL.

          I almost caved in at one point (I am not feeling well today), but then I told him that it would be best if he has the new firm prepare his taxes otherwise he will have the same issues in 2006 as he does in 2005.

          I could go on for pages about this guy, but I have to get back to (my easy) work.

          Thanks for listening all.
