He would file MFJ with the new wife and MFS for the deceased spouse. Thought this was the way, so I checked on pg. 23, Pub 17. It is.

He could file MFS -- but he'd list his new wife on his tax form. His current wife would then also MFS.
Yes, the deceased woman gets MFS.
