    SS Number

If child of TP doesn't have a SS number, they must get one before filing and claiming the child as a dependent, isn't that corrrect?

      According to Pub 17

...on page 13 "If you do not provide a required SSN or if you provide an incorrect SSN, your tax may be increased and any refund may be reduced."

Also, says that if not received by April 17, you may want to file extension request.

Only in government or politics is a "cut in spending" really an increase. It's just not as much of an increase as they wanted it to be, therefore a "cut".

whether efiling or filing paper return.

The ONLY time (in recent years of course) my client did not have to have social secuity
numbers for her twins is because the twins died something like within six hours of
        being born.

An explanation and copies of birth and death certificates went with the paper
        return.

          Thanks

for the replies. I've pretty much found the same thing. No passes on this one. If no SS number, better go apply for one and wait to file until you get it.

            SS Number

Honest Abe who believes everyone learned a lesson two years ago. When doing a return for an immigrant I always ask is the social security real or fake. You find out when you try to efile the return. I efile as many returns as I can. The client has no choice in the matter. If they want to mail a paper return they can go somewhere else.

              SSN/ITIN Missing

              Your choices are:

              1. File without the dependent and then amend the return when the SSN/ITIN is acquired.

              2. File an extension tax based on not being able to claim dependent, so if there is a tax due it is paid on time. And then file the tax return when the SSN/ITIN is obtained or at the end of the extension period. Then if the SSN/ITIN is obtained at an even later date, file an amended return claiming the child if the right to claim the refund has not past.

This applies for both the state and federal returns.

Your and your clients decision should depend on how likely your client is to following up on filing a return after applying for the extension.

                Applied for in hospital

I am under the impression that applying for a social security number is part of the paperwork that is done in the hospital before the mother and child leave.

That is the way it was with both of my grandchldren.

Was this child born in 2006 or an older child?

                  Turns out

the child does have a SS Number, so it's not a problem, but good to know these things for future reference. The child was born in 2006.

Linda F: I was thinking the same thing as when our daughter was born back in 2001, I'm pretty sure the hospital provided paper work for obtaining a SS Number.

                    Immigrants and SSN

When I have an immigrant with dependents with no ssn I file the return with Application for ITIN's to Philadelphia. This is one exceptiong to the rule for efiling all returns. Darn it there are exceptions tp any hard and fast rule. I do get my fee before the return is mailed however.
