    All States

Wondering from those of you who use the All States book, how useful has it been? How much detail do you get or is it mostly just summary info.

    Practitioner Oriented

Hyatt, the book gets about as much relevant detail as possible, considering it has to encompass all 50 states in one book that can be lifted and ring-bound.

Included is practitioner-oriented information. What's missing is political rhetoric aimed at state residents, and redundant instructions already in practice by practitioners.

I used the 2005 version quite a bit. In Tennessee, you are within 50 miles of another state regardless of where you practice, and all 8 neighboring states have income taxes. I don't have many years where I don't file at least 7-8 other states.

The critical help area in my opinion is the so-called "Additions and Subtractions" which almost all the states have in their format. Most of them begin with federal AGI and then use these "Additions and Subtractions" to arrive at state table income. You can gather more hard-hitting succinct information from TTB state version about these than wading through reams and reams of the various state pubs. And these adjustments are where you can really help the taxpayer the most.

Don't expect 500 pages on every state. But you will get enough information to do your job well, and will be referred to various state voluminous publications if you encounter an extremely rare situation.

      I agree with "Snaggs",..........

...... althought I don't use it often. But when I need it, it makes quick work of handling that "out of state" return that could tie up a lot of time that I don't have available. Well worth the price just having it.

        I would

agree snaggle. The adds/subtracts would be the critical area. Thanks for the replies.
