Our good friends from Mexico and other places often have social security cards with names such as

Carlos s de gomez garcia

Is there a website where you can try to figure out is the last name that IRS will accept for E-file?

Once I get them right in the system I do love that proforma feature.

Unfortunately the SSA does not seem to use a standard method of assigning names to which naming protocol, what are the middle name(s) and what are surname(s). I've had clients with 'Carlos de gomez garcia' in the system as last name: 'Gomez Garcia', and others with last name Garcia, middle names 'de gomez', and some with last name 'de Gomez Garcia.' When efiling I just try each combination until one sticks. It may be the way it is entered into the SSN application by the person that causes some of the problem too.

Ladies and Gentleman, follow BobW's and Taxmandan's advise and you will prevail.

When I have to match names up, I just remind myself that this is part of the job.

I dont blame anybody. I am just grateful that this client choose me to prepare their Tax return.

Trial & error

Unfortunately, viewing the SS card provides no clue as to where the taxpayer's last name actually begins. And I've also seen this happen when a woman marries and appends her husband's name to her own original first and last name. I just do like taxmandan and try the different options until I get an e-file acceptance.

I check the social security card. I know some have four names. First, Middle, Last, and then they also use the mother's maiden name. I just try each one until it goes through.
