    Backups

I know this has been discussed befor. Facts:

    1) I have a 250 gb external drive for backup of my Dell desktop (All mytax files) and of my iMac music library. I have two folders on the drive PC, and Apple.

    2) I want to run backups each night of work that I have on either.

    3) I have a Flash drivecard to use daily for work done in Clients homes.

This I believe requires the use of software that I don't have. What do you use and recommend?

Thanking you in advance. This Board is the greatest because of people like you.

Chief, you ony need to have extra software, if you want to run your backups automatically. Some of the backup programs have problems with automatic backup to an USB drive. My backup program needs me to confim that I have a media in the drive, even though it is already in there.

I am curious too, what others will suggest.

      backups

I use SecondCopy to automatically make backups. SecondCopy can make many backups to anywhere except a CD. I use SecondCopy to make backups every night to 3 differant flashdrives.

        To be honest.....

...... any backup done in house is still a potential problem. Don't get me wrong, back ups are good. But the least desirable is backing up on the same drive where the original data is. The next better is BU on a second drive on the same computer. Then backing up to a second computer or extenal device. Then to a removable drive or device. The best and most convinent overall method is for an off site automatic daily backup. I use backup solution. com but there are others, most more expensive> some less expensive.

I use removeable harddrives that you can get at office depot or office max . They run 100 to 200 dollars depending on the size. They are basically a laptop harddrive that has a protective case. They work wonderful , better than a flashdrive or tape backup. They are only the size of a deck of cards or crayon box.

            external hard drive

I have an external hard drive that is on the blink right now, (a maxtor).

I have always made paper copys of all my taxes to keep for 3 or 4 years simply because I trust that method more than electronics.

We all used to do that and we all felt very confident with our storage of completed works. But backups do more than what paper will do. Backups save work in progress, save client files with all the right info that took months or years to create, not to mention the ease of restoring those files.

Paper burns and can be water logged. A proper back up system not only saves finished work but saves ALL work in process with client info intact. Until this backup is off site it may be no better than a paper hard copies in a file cabinet.

I hope I'm not sounding too abrupt. It is not intended that way.

We use LogMeIn backup software. Our dailiy backups are automatically to an external hard drive on one of the office computers AND to an external hard drive on the computer in my house. The second is "off-site" while still being under my control.

                  I like.....

it very much... Nice going. What type of internet program allows you to access your home computer for transfer?

I just did a search and found their site > 6.95 a month. a good buy. Especially when you consider personal time and then control of in-house backups when you leave the office.

We use "LogMeIn" software to basically "work from home". The same company has an automatic backup program. You achedule it for a certain time every say or every week. You can get a free trial of either program at logmein.com. If you buy, you are charged by computer.

                      Currently....

.... I use "gotomypc" for access to office computers from home or anywhere, and it has file transfer capibilities. But not scheduled "preselected" files. I use "backup solution" for my offsite backup of important files.

I will look into your program futher. But I do like the geographical backup of Iron Mountain. But, when is the east coast going to be totally distroyed and, if I survive, I get to move out west.

                        Bob

Bob I know all the benefits of having a backup system, and if I did taxes on a larger scale I would be more into it. Like I said I bought an external hard drive for that very purpose a couple of years ago and it worked fine for about a year. Now it isn't doing what its suppose to do.

Anyway I don't do Partnerships or Corporations returns so I don't have a lot of (work in progress) type of stuff.

I'm sorry if I sounded condencending, but I just wanted to make a point for the readers. Sorry for appearing to use you as the fall guy. The fact that you had a backup system speaks well of you.

                          Again, I apoligies.

Ken, I dont apologize. For a dumb old barber what can you expect? Get that external drive out of the dust and start using it again. If you mother was aroundshe would say that boy never did know much. If you don't someday you may be sorry and I will be the first to say I told you so.

Have a good day, good buddy or should I say old buddy (not in the trucker's sense)

From a smart guy Chief who never makes a mistake.

                              thank-you for the reminder

Billy, I wanted to thank you for starting this thread last month. I knew I wanted to improve my daily backup process, and your thread was exactly the jump start I needed at the time. I put in a Bounce Back system after I read your thread. This morning my hard drive failed; I've never experienced that before. After having a new one installed today, I was able to restore everything easily, and now I am up and running beautifully. So thank you for reminding us of what we know we should be doing, but sometimes don't.
