    Jail

A colleague did a return for a man in prison last season. He was told to hand write the address, return address, etc., and not to use labels. Labels are used to smuggle drugs into prisons. Don't know about the stamps! Preparer received the check before mailing the return. Good luck.

      Cash on Delivery

      ...to his attorney, that is.

The guy isn't going to pay you unless you have special arrangements. He's not going to pay $3000 to the IRS either. They'll eventually get it, but if doesn't have anything to lien or levy, they have lost their leverage.

I would classify this as a distress assignment. I don't know where you live, but in cases of bankrupts, intestates, disputed assets, etc. courts have been known to assign these to accountants, and methodically collect the money to pay for it, through the marshalling of assets if need be.

Talk to his attorney. I guarantee you HE is getting paid!!

Also, Jainen, if you're reading this, why does Sue Baby HAVE to be this guy's accountant? Because she gave a simple "yes" not knowing the circumstances?
I don't necessarily agree with you, and perhaps don't disagree either, but would like to
know why Sue is forced to take on this idiot...and by the way -- you're right -- if she does this, IRS is going to be sniffing around for unreported drug income.

        you can manage

        >>why does Sue Baby HAVE to be this guy's accountant?<<

Oh, Snaggle! She doesn't HAVE to be his accountant. I said that she IS because that's what she told us. She started out, "I am in the middle of a client's amended 2004 return." Later she tried to weasel out and say he wasn't a client, but she went ahead and finished the job and now she's calling his sister and telling the whole world about this relationship problem she has.

Sue Baby, if you don't want to go on then tell the poor guy straight up. There's no discredit in that--he knows that almost everyone he trusts has given up on him, and rightly so. But until you break off, well, keep up the good work!

          My ex-con client

Years ago I had an ex-con for a client. He said he made more money the year he was in prison than ever before because his depreciation had run out.

He always paid me when he brought his records.

I have over 200 clients and I know each inside and out and trust them to pay and they are all very good. That is MY clients. But someone new especially like this--I will do one time and that's it. Way too much hassle for me.
I talked to the lawyer, he is to pay me and send papers to him in jail to sign and send off. That's it for me. I don't want the headache and yes it is 3 years for DWIs, drug distribute, and others I didn't listen to.
I don't even think I asked for enough money that either. I will just stick with the clients I know and trust, which is more than plenty for me. Thanks for all the input it helped alot.
