    Multiple state efiling registrations ?

We use Ultratax and have only efiled Michigan returns .... until this year.

We need to be able to efile in the following states (I know some don't have income tax) ....... FL, OH, IL, NV, WI, HA, PA, GA, NY, TX, NC, SC, CA and MD.

Anybody know which require some sort of registration in advance or anything else we should plan for??

    UltraTax

I also use UT. To find this information Click on Help. Click the Index tab. Type in Electronic Filing. Under the sub headings go to State General Information. It will bring up a Topics Found box, click on 1040 State Gen EFile Info and click Display.

It has every state, contact person, phone and e-mail, application requirements and resubmission requirements.

I would put a favorite quote in here, but it would get me banned from the board.

There is no additional forms needed

I have prepared taxes for each of the states you have listed besides HA & NV. I know the other states will be fine with your form 8633. Illinois used to have a seperate process but as of this year they have conformed to the majority now using your form 8633 for state purposes as well. As you stated, Florida and Texas dont have state taxes...so just check on Hawaii and Nevada.

        Be sure......

............ to register with the IRS Elf unit for states out of your state. You may have already done this on your original application.

FYI> NJ requires a separate reg.

I'm not seeing how to do that on the 8633. Is it possible that it isn't needed any more? I do seem to recall a spot on an older version of the form to designate states.

            It is not....

... on the form. You need to call Elf or go on their special web site for practioners.

All that you need to do is tell them you will be filing nationally. Most original applications are for your resident state and that needs to be updated. very simple, just call.

Go here- http://www.irs.gov/taxpros/article/0,,id=109646,00.html -for registration with

Joan (#0805037) at the IRS says you don't need to call to make a change. All existing Authorized eFile Providers are automatically able to work with each state.

That is only related to the IRS registration........ each state may have it's own requirements.

                That's good.....

....news. It is a change in policy from the past. Follow some of the other threads about state registration for efile.

                  Nj, Mn, Ca

I asked basically the same question a couple of days ago, and got zero responses. Are you guys mad at me for some reason?

I'm still not absolutely certain of the answer, but think NJ, MN, and CA require registration of preparers not located in the state.

Can anyone answer this with certainty? Thanks!

                    Hey Zee

LOL, Don't feel bad, you never know when you will get a thousand viewers and no posters.

I will say, that the states that you are specifically asking for are states that I have never prepared taxes for. I believe someone earlier in the thread confirmed NJ as a state you will have to register with.

Its quite easy to find out, just go to the state specific website, and they will let you know.

P.S. I will almost guess that California is one of those states you will have to register in, they do things much different there. I used to be in the Mortgage industry, and CALI brought the most headaches!

                      State requirements

During the 2005 filing year the following states had requirements in addition to acceptance in the federal program for out of state filers:

AR, CA, IL, LA, MN, NJ, UT, WV, and WI

For 2006 filing year IL has dropped the additional requirement. I am not sure if any of the other states have changed requirements for 2006.

                        Wisconsin

I don't believe Wisconsin is on this list. I've never had any problems with Wisconsin, and the website provides info indicating that once you are accepted by the IRS as an ERO, you are automatically accepted into the State's system

                          Pro-Series website answer

The following link lists the states requiring additional information on state e-filing registration requirements. There are a lot more states that require additional information, have in/out state differences in requirements, or require registration. It was last updated on 7/12 and includes WI & IL, so it may be outdated already.

That's interesting...the other post indicated the WI website indicated registration was no longer necessary. So, which is it? Darn...why is it information that should be easy so obtain is so difficult?
