I have a client who attended a church convention in Germany as a chaperone.

What are opinions as to the deductibility of the airfare from the U.S. to Germany?

I may be wrong on this, but I seem to recall that you have to be a delegate to the convention in order to deduct the expenses. You have to be sent in an official capacity. I don't think just being a chaperone will be allowed if the IRS challenges this.

What sort of a convention was it? What was the purpose of this trip? Was it a job? If it was volunteer work, what organization did he serve? What relationship does he have with that organization? How significant was his role as chaperone compared to his attendance or participation in the convention? What else did he do on the trip? Who paid the airfare, and what did it cover? Naturally with a church convention, the devil is in the details.
