    W2-W3 Mistake

PITA past client with horrendous bookeeping skills did his own quarterly payroll filings. He brought his bits and pieces of records to me to prepare W2's and other year-end reports. Yea, I know now DON"T EVER DO THIS.
Problem: The W2's and or W3 that was filed showed almost $3000 more withheld than actually was witheld and paid in. He has now received a notice of defeciency with a blank 941c. It does not appear there is anywhere on this form to address this problem. Do I simply send the correct W3 - W2's with a letter of explanation? I suppose the employees will need corrected W2's to check that their returns are correct. What a mess.

    W2c

I believe in this case you would sumitt a W2c with the 941c; and send the employee a W2c which shows the W2 amounts before and after the correction.

      The other alternative

      >>W3 that was filed showed almost $3000 more withheld than actually was<<

The other alternative is to ask the employees to pay the money that should have been withheld but wasn't.
