Word of mouth is our best source of new clients. Second to that is the Yellow Pages. If you are comfortable speaking you can make yourself available to speak to business groups. Writing an article about taxes for Neighborhood Associations newsletters can bring in some new clients. They often are looking for content and will publish if the piece is not outright self promotion. In other words, a democratic government is the only one in which those who vote for a tax can escape the obligation to pay it.

Family Retention
The question probably is trying to focus on marketing techniques: promotional material, advertising, etc.
I believe one of the truly fertile fields are children of current customers. My practice has focused on retention of clients, and by my own admission, their children that are becoming working age are more interested in going to a "fast refund" place, or buying TurboTax, than seeking out a competent tax practitioner.
Yes, I know that when they start out, they are all doing short forms and EZs. But eventually they start farming, rental houses, investments, etc. just like their parents. If we could just retain the children of our current customers, our volume would go up 10-15% per year.

Referrals
Often times I get referrals from my own clients. When that happens, I inquire with the new client as to who prepared their return last year. Often times, the preparer has or is quitting. I have worked out a deal with the preparer to refer meand have been successful at this a couple three times.

Referrals
When I get a client that has been referred to me, I inquire as to who prepared his return prior to me. In some case, the previous preparer has quit or is quitting. I have contacted him to work out a deal to refer me and I gave him a percentage on every return prepared. This has worked out on occasions.
