    Timely filed acceptance being 10/17?

I E-filed several tax returns yesterday evening and am in the process of printing out the Form 9325's. They all state "Your return was accepted by the IRS on 10/17/06.

My stupid question is, are they considered timely filed thru the tax software on the 16th or are they considered late as they were not accepted by the IRS until today?

TTB, page 15-12 says "if the return is successfully transmitted on or before the due date and the provider complies with the requirements for signing the return, the return will be considered timely filed..." Which of course assumes the return is eventually accepted and acknowledged by the IRS.

The problem is, if for some technical reason the IRS rejects it, now you are late, as there is no time to fix the problem and re-submit it.

I always cut off electronic filing during the final week. Even if there is something wrong with the return, a paper return is considered filed on the date it is postmarked.

      Thanks Bees

None of my returns were rejected so I should be fine.
As always I appreciate your help.

Rejects have until 10/20 to correct. We had one today, missed 10/16 drain by about 5 minutes, but IRS accepted it today at noon, go-figure. Guess they felt since they only had a noon drain to let the afternoon/evening returns get accepted (my guess). Because according to their guidelines, e-filing ended on 10/16 with the noon drain.

But as Bees Knees pointed out: TTB, page 15-12 says "if the return is successfully transmitted on or before the due date and the provider complies with the requirements for signing the return, the return will be considered timely filed..." And my software did send status verification of "Return Transmitted 10/16/06" and "Return Sent to IRS 10/16/06" then finally "Return Accepted 10/17/06". So this should serve as the "postmark" that the return was sent on 10/16/06. One of my returns had a balance due of $8,000+ that for their sake I was hoping won't be charged a Late Filing Fee.

I sent a return by efile on 10-16-2006. It was rejected on 10-17-2006. I resent after making correction on 10-17-06. It was accepted today.

The reason it was rejected was a 19 year old did his own return and claimed himself even though his parents told him not to and of course he insists he did not. The "aunt" helped him complete the retun because he did not want to pay a minimal fee to me to do it. So I get to charge his parents more money.

You may of course. I noticed on the Atxer board many use a signature. I would encourage the same here.
