Customer with an AGI of $173-K e-filed a relatively simple 2025 1040 requesting direct deposit of her $3,604 refund.
Instead, she got a CP-12C letter from IRS requesting a fax of her 1040 pages 1 & 2 as well as other supporting docs.
In the letter they acknowledge receiving her return but say they need more information to process it.
I had a customer about 5 years ago with this same situation, receiving the same letter & fax number of 844 254-2834.
Verified this fax number with IRS 5 years ago so the fax # and letter seem legitimate.
Anyone know why IRS is doing this? Is it at random because of all the fraud in e-filed returns?
Thanks for comments.
