Taxpayer who owed and paid on line received a CP53E notice that IRS could not deposit his refund . Letter looks to be from IRS but always aware could be a scam. Has others received this notice but owed instead of having a refund. Any insight or guidance appreciated

It's very common this year. Some examples of reasons I've read on other forums:
1) Taxpayer forgot to tell you about an ES payment they made
2) Tax return included penalty for underpaid estimates but taxpayer was in a disaster area
3) Tax return included penalty for underpaid estimates calculated thru 4/15/26 but tax was paid earlier
4) Some other math error (not as likely with pro tax software) resulted in the IRS owing the taxpayer money
If the taxpayer has an irs.gov / id.me login they may be able to see what adjustments have been posted to their account.
If you have a POA you may be able to do the same.
Good luck, and keep us posted!
